Commercialisation of Nanotechnology in Germany

Background

In the field of nanotechnology, Germany is a leader in research but the commercialisation of the technology is proving difficult.

In 2005, FESTEL CAPITAL,  together with the Impulskreis Nanowelten and the VDI Technologiezentrum,  conducted an interview-based market study to investigate the success factors for an effective commercialisation of nanotechnology in Germany.

Summary of the results of the market study

Core Messages

  • An important aspect for the commercialisation is the building up of a functional start-up scene (e.g. through targeted support of academical and industrial spin offs).
  • In Germany, more favourable conditions for start ups is necessary (less bureaucratic obstacles, lower tax burden).
  • Start ups often do not have the economical expertise or experience, therefore technology-oriented founders have to be more open towards professional management.
  • Financing  in the seed phase is difficult, but there are also problems with the follow-up financing.
  • Long-term views and technical understanding of the investors is important.
  • More transparent, simple and targeted government subsidies policies are needed (government assistance measures have to be better coordinated).
  • There are no acceptance problems but more public relations work is necessary.
