What are Founding Angels?

Founding Angels help bridge the so-called ‘gap’, which exists between academic research and the commercialisation of the new technologies. Together with inventors, they found start-up companies to further develop the research and commercialise the results.

The Founding Angels’ business model is similar to that of Business Angels, but the operational and financial ((pre)seed funding) support of Founding Angels begins before the actual founding of the start-up and, as a member of the founding/management team, continues in the founding and building up of the new start-up company

Founding Angels do not receive compensation for their work and support in the founding and building up of the start-up; like the other founding members, they hold an equity share in the start-up company.

Founding Angels have extensive know how and understanding in

  • company business management
  • the scientific background
  • financing issues
  • leadership competence and the ability to form an excellent management team
  • the building up of highly effective and efficient operational structures

What is the background?

The non-profit Founding Angels’ initiative is aimed at promoting the Founding Angels’ business model. The initiators are international academics and business people with the intention to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in high-tech areas.

The initiators consider technological progress as the essential factor to overcome today's challenges, such as climate change, food and energy supply. An important catalyst for the commercial success of new innovative technologies are new high-tech start-up companies.

In order to raise the number of high-tech start-up companies, the initiators are looking to build-up and establish a Founding Angels network, as they believe Founding Angels are an important driving force for the creation of start-up companies.

What are the opportunities?

Inventors: Scientists and research organisations receive the opportunity to obtain uncompensated support at a very early stage in the founding and building up of a start-up to commercialise new innovative technologies.

Investors: Business Angels and other investors receive the opportunity to ensure attractive investment possibilities with high value creation potential.
